IN SANTA
MARTA, MAGDALENA, COLOMBIA
Santa Marta,
founded in 1525, is America's oldest city, and
Colombia´s second most popular Caribbean tourist
destination-after Cartagena. Many who vacation
here, or have apartments in the nearby beach
community of Rodadero, are from Medellin, Bogota,
and Colombia´s other major cities. A high
percentage of tourists are carefree backpackers
from Israel, Holland, Denmark, Germany, France,
etc. These computer savvy and thrifty
vagabonds are especially good at discovering low
cost tourist "hidden gems" of the world as
evidenced by recent visitor increases in family
and upscale tourists. Santa Marta is safe, fun,
economical and lives up to it's self promotion
of: The Magic of Having Everything.
Arrival and local
transportation options are many, inexpensive and
operate at frequent intervals. Santa Marta is
served by a wide variety of hotels, rental
apartments, hostiles, PLUS many good restaurants
abound, with heavy menu emphasis of sea food
caught fresh daily by the thousands of local
fishermen, who for generations, have called this
area: "home".
Local bus service
is frequent, cheap (50 cents u.s), and will
efficiently transport you ALL OVER, including
nearby towns and attractions. Typically, the
buses used are vans with seating for 14. Taxis
are plentiful, and in-expensive. They are not
metered so be sure to arrive at the fair BEFORE
you enter the cab.
Crystal clear
waters, miles of sandy white beach's, great
off-shore reefs and diving, PLUS Historical and
Ecological treasures to be discovered, provide
satisfied tourists with many reasons to return
again and again.
